2021 NBBI Technical Scholarship Recipients
The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors awarded scholarships to two students pursuing degrees in engineering.
Eliza Mullins is a rising senior majoring in construction engineering technology at the New York City College of Technology. She expects to graduate in May 2022. Mullins has interned at her grandfather’s company, NxtNDT, since 2019 and hopes to “follow in her family’s footsteps.” After graduation, she wants to become an American Society for Nondestructive Testing Level III and hopes to perform and teach NDT in the future. Mullins is a member of ANST and the American Concrete Institute. She carries a 3.4 GPA. Her grandfather is National Board Commissioned Inspector Lawrence Mullins Sr.
Sandra Ponce is a rising senior majoring in mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University. She expects to graduate in May 2022. Ponce has been a member of a Texas A&M water desalination research team, developing compressor and piping models using SolidWorks and Blender CAD software. After graduation, she wants to work in design or manufacturing engineering. Ponce serves as a Texas A&M athlete tutor and is a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. She carries a 3.8 GPA. Her father is Luis Ponce, National Board Manager of Technical Services.
The National Board Technical Scholarship is available to the children, stepchildren, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of past or present National Board Commissioned Inspectors (living or deceased) and to past or present National Board employees (living or deceased). Each year, the National Board offers up to $24,000 in scholarships to selected students meeting eligibility standards and who are pursuing a bachelor's degree in a qualified engineering curriculum or related studies. Applicants must also be enrolled, full-time, in an accredited four-year college or university in the US or Canada with a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
The 2022 NBBI Technical Scholarship application period opens September 1, 2021. Applications are due by February 28, 2022.
