National Board Saddened by Traffic Accident

Former National Board Assistant Executive Director – Technical George Bynog was apparently killed during a traffic accident near Crockett, Texas, on Saturday morning, November 1. He was 65.

Mr. Bynog was en route from Columbus, Ohio, to his ranch near Austin, Texas, following his October 31 resignation from the National Board.

Mr. Bynog joined the National Board on May 3, 2005. He previously served as chief boiler inspector for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Mr. Bynog retired from the Texas position in 2003 after 14 years as a National Board member.

Prior to becoming chief, the former National Board official served in the US Navy for 21 years. He retired in 1981 as master chief petty officer.

Mr. Bynog consequently joined the state of Texas in 1982, first working as an inspection specialist before becoming assistant chief inspector.

“The National Board family and the pressure equipment industry has been shocked by George’s death,” says National Board Acting Executive Director Richard Allison. “The depth of his knowledge and understanding of the National Board Inspection Code and the inspection process were without equal. In only three and one-half years with the National Board, George established a new standard of professionalism and resolve that will be his legacy for years to come. We will not only miss his counsel, we will miss his dry sense of humor and a grin as wide as Texas.”

In addition to serving on the National Board’s Constitution and Bylaws Standing Committee, the Task Group on Criteria for Registration, and the Strategic Plan Task Group, Mr. Bynog was also a long-term member and chairman of the National Board Inspection Code Committee.

The Honorary National Board Member also served on several ASME committees, including the Subcommittee on Boiler and Pressure Vessel Accreditation and the Post Construction Committee.

In 2003, Mr. Bynog was chosen recipient of the National Board Safety Medal, the highest commendation given by the National Board.

The Texas native held National Board Commission No. 9683 with “A,” “B,” “I,” “N,” and “NS” endorsements.

He is survived by his wife Denise and two grown daughters.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 7, with the funeral service to immediately follow.
