2024 NBBI Technical Scholarship Recipients
Each year, The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI) offers scholarships to students who meet eligibility standards, including being accepted to or currently enrolled full-time in a trade school, technical college, or university in the United States or Canada and majoring in mechanical, manufacturing, electrical, industrial, welding, or chemical engineering, or other closely related engineering majors. To apply, students must be a child, stepchild, grandchild or great-grandchild of a National Board Commissioned Inspector or National Board employee, whether past or present, living or deceased.
In 2024, NBBI awarded $30,000 in total scholarships, divided among four recipients out of 10 applicants.
Teagan Fynan is a first-year student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and is majoring in mechanical engineering. He has a 3.7 GPA and Engineering Department Dean's List. Although he’s undecided on a career path, Tegan said he would like to be involved with risk prevention and safety in engineering. His grandfather is National Board Commissioned Inspector Albert Fynan.
Hudson Lane is a freshman at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. He is studying for a degree in mechanical engineering and has a 3.8 GPA. An Eagle Scout, Hudson is considering following the career path of his father, National Board Commissioned Inspector Gordon Scott Lane, and become involved with risk assessment and the inspection of pressure vessel equipment.
Madison Maldonado is a junior at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and has a 3.7 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. She was an engineering student mentor while at Salt Lake Community College and has been a secretary for the Society of Women Engineers. Madison also plans to earn a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. Her father is National Board Commissioned Inspector Todd Maldonado.
Arianna Santos is a sophomore at McMaster University in Hamiton, Ontario, and is pursuing a degree in materials engineering and society with a minor in sustainability. She has a 4.0 GPA. Last summer at Xi Research Group, Arianna worked on bioplastics projects and is a second-year representative for the Engineering and Society Students Association. Her father is National Board Commissioned Inspector Gilbert Santos.
The National Board Technical Scholarship Selection Panel consists of chief inspectors and NBBI employees. The 2025 application period opens September 1, 2024, and applications are due by February 28, 2025. Click here for more information.
