NATIONAL BOARD MOURNS DEATH OF MIKE SULLIVAN

The National Board was sad to learn of the February 14 passing of former National Board staff member and independent ASME consultant Michael Francis Sullivan. He was 76 years old.

Born in Anaconda, Montana, Mr. Sullivan attended the University of Oregon at Eugene and served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1967.

Following work in the relatively new commercial nuclear power utility industry, he joined the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as a volunteer expert in 1987. From 1987 to 1994, Mr. Sullivan was employed by The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors in several capacities including that of consultant and manager of international operations. During this time, he served on the ASME BPV Committee on Construction of Nuclear Facilities Components and Subgroup on General Requirements. In 1994, he joined ASME as an independent consultant, including serving as senior consultant from 2008-2013.  In 2011, he received the ASME Dedicated Service Award as testament to his outstanding contributions to the Society.

“Mike’s contributions over four decades in the pressure equipment industry are many,” stated National Board Executive Director David Douin. “He will be missed by his friends and associates both at ASME and the National Board. Additionally, he will be missed by the many friends he touched around the world. His loss will be felt in our industry for many years to come.”

Preceded in death by daughter Michelle, Mr. Sullivan is survived by Mary Lou, his wife of 55 years, and four daughters: Karen, Julie, Peggy, and Patti, and two grandchildren.
