NBIC Summer 2023 Meeting Recap

National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) Committee members assembled in-person and remotely July 10-13, with in-person attendees meeting at the Live by Loew’s hotel in St. Louis.

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) made a presentation July 11 on its investigation of the Loy-Lange Box Co. incident, which killed four people in April 2017 in St. Louis. Speaking from the CSB were Stephen Klejst, executive director of investigations and recommendations; Drew Sahli, investigator in charge; and Adam Henson, a recommendation specialist. The investigation is the subject of the cover story for the summer edition of the BULLETIN and can be found here.

Those recognized for their service were Stan Konopacki (15 years on the subcommittee on installation) and Thakor Patel and Brandon Nutter (both 10 years on the subcommittee on pressure relief devices).

Elections were held and earning positions were: Konopacki of NRG Energy (vice chair of the subcommittee on installation); Bob Underwood from Hartford Steam Boiler (chair of the subgroup on repairs and alterations); Tim McBee from Arise (vice chair of the subgroup on repairs and alterations); Dan Marek from Mainthia Technologies (chair of the subgroup on pressure relief devices), and David McHugh from Allied Valve (vice chair of the subgroup on pressure relief devices).

Five new interpretations of the 2021 NBIC Edition from the meetings can be found here, along with previous interpretations. In addition, 16 code change proposals were approved, and an errata regarding references to Form NB-5 (which was removed from NBIC Part 2 for the 2023 edition) was approved for publication on the National Board website.

The NBIC is published every other year. The newest edition was published in July 2023 and is available for purchase, and changes to the 2023 edition can be found here.
