John Arnold Announced as General Session Speaker

The National Board is pleased to announce John L. Arnold, principal with Niantic Bay Engineering, LLC, will address the 89th General Meeting in Aurora, Colorado.

Arnold’s presentation, “The Use of Phased Array Ultrasonic Examination Methods for ASME Code Weld Acceptance,” is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. Monday, May 11.

For over 30 years, Mr. Arnold has been helping utilities manage aging fossil plant assets through the development of comprehensive assessment programs, field engineering evaluations, and laboratory metallurgical testing. His work focuses on boilers and HRSGs and the evaluation of water and steam-touched tubing, associated drums and headers, as well as high-energy piping systems.

He will speak on applying advanced ultrasonic examination methods to examine welds for compliance with the requirements of ASME Section I and Section VIII. Arnold was part of the team that developed Code Case 2235, which was the initial application for using ultrasonic examination methods in lieu of radiography. Since its publication in 1996, the Code Case has been revised numerous times and has since been incorporated into both Section I and Section VIII.

A licensed professional engineer, Arnold earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Lowell in Lowell, Massachusetts; and a master’s degree in metallurgy and materials engineering from the University of Connecticut. He is a member of numerous ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code committees, including the Chair of the Section I Subgroup on Fabrication and Examination, and the Task Group investigating the use of risk analysis for Section I and Section VIII rules for design and examination. Arnold is also an ASME Fellow.
